The author criticizes Italian psychiatric reforms resulting in Law 180. Case vignettes of suicidal or helpless patients illustrate what the author views as the perverse effects of deinstitutionalization, restrictions on compulsory admissions & the view of psychiatric treatment as merely a form of oppression. Attributing individual responsibility to chronic psychiatric patients is deemed an abdication of social responsibility to the disabled. (LH)
