Although the general hospital patient’s needs for psychologic care are similar in Britain & the U.S., the role, boundaries, & organization of liaison psychiatry are very different. These differences are examined & the British approaches described. Greater awareness of the nature of these differences & of clinical developments & research in the 2 countries would contribute to the further development of consultation & liaison. Models for the management of attempted suicide are discussed.
