Presents 2 studies designed to examine problems of under-reporting of suicides as related to variations in suicide ascertainment procedures, which differ from one country to another. Both studies demonstrated difference in national practices & attitudes regarding ascertainment procedures which casts doubt on the value of international comparisons based on national statistics. The need for international acceptance of standard reporting procedures is emphasized. 14 refs. (LH)
