All suicides occurring in 1984 in Baranya (pop. 434,000) were investigated. Rates of attempted & completed suicides were 53.5 & 317.8 respectively, per 100,000. The ratio of commetted to attempted suicide was 1-5.5 & varied according to age & sex. The highest incidence of self-destructive behavior occurs in those with elementary education &/or with skilled or unskilled workers. 56% of attempters were discharged without psychotherapeutic intervention.
