This methodological note corrects errors in classic and recent studies on phases of the moon and abnormal behavior. It also describes more appropriate (time series analyses) procedures for detecting lunar periodicities in behavior.

Data from completed suicides in New Jersey in 1970 were examined to see if completed suicides were more common at the time of the new moon. The authors found the answers to be in the negative.
