Dr. Berman examines the 17-year history of the AAS, firmly stating it is time to establish the identity of suicidology. He calls for standardization of nomenclature & an accepted definition of suicide, the formulation of a body of observations that would constitute a knowledge base about suicide, & formal, professional training in suicidology.

Twenty one papers, in English, French and German, covering various aspects of suicidology, including surveys of Canadian crisis centres and international prevention programs; follow up studies on attempters; national studies for Sheffield, England and Ireland; the Jonestown phenomena; gun control legislation; renal dialysis and suicide occurrence and media coverage.
