Highlights

•Temporal variation is evident in suicide in England with higher risk in the early part of the year.
•Suicide risk was significantly lower during the Christmas period.
•A peak in suicide was found on New Year’s Day and Mondays in the general population.
•Suicide risk was higher on Mondays in patients aged over 50 or those living alone.
•Services should consider added support for vulnerable people during particular time periods.
