Grande Prairie and area experienced a cluster of suicide between April and June 2012 — 8 suicides were reported to the Suicide Prevention Resource Centre. The high school had been previously affected by the deaths of 4 high school football players in a motor vehicle crash in the fall of 2011. In the days, weeks and months that followed the tragedy, the boys were honored, celebrated, and to a a degree glorified, creating conditions that have been associated with suicide clusters. The school reported that they had a list of students at risk and othes who were hospitalized for suicidal ideation and/or a suicide attempt. In response to the suicide cluster, the community formed a committee to coordinate action to prevent more suicidal deaths and heal the community.
