Suicide research consistently demonstrates that women have higher rates of suicidal behaviour, i.e. ideation, planning and suicide attempts compared to men; however men are more likely to die by suicide. Gender plays a significant role in suicide and suicidal behaviours. Gender differences have been reported in relation to suicide methods, risk and protective factors, causal factors, the very nature of suicidal behaviour and how it is manifested. Our knowledge of these differences remains incomplete, particularly so for reported gender differences in those who attempt suicide, and also within different age groups.
