Relationships between traumatic life events & suicide risk were studied in 2 samples of jail inmates, 216 with low suicide risk & 51 with high suicide risk. Suicidal inmates reported a higher prevalence of traumatic life events, including more episodes of sexual abuse, physical maltreatment, emotional maltreatment, abandonment, & suicide attempts by significant others. They also had experienced more traumatic life events during childhood, later life, & detention. Suicide risk is concluded to be dependent on the type of life event, the timing of the event, & the type of persons involved in the event. (54 refs.) JA
