This study developed, piloted, & validated a measure of health care professionals’ attitudes towards patients who have attempted suicide. A 102-item questionnaire was constructed from an existing instrument & findings from a literature review. A pilot study was carried out with a sample of 40 doctors & nurses. Questionnaires were then distributed to a sample of 186 doctors & nurses working in 2 hospitals in Athens. A factor analysis was performed & a face validity of the tool was assessed by a group of experts. Reliability was assessed by test-retest. Preliminary analysis reduced the 102 items to 80. 8 factors which accounted for 55.45% of the total variance were retained. The resultant questionnaire achieved high internal consistency. (26 refs.)
