This study examined the association between posttraumatic stress disorder & suicide in a population-based Danish sample. All suicides between January 1994-December 2006 were included, & controls were selected from a sample of all Danish residents. Using a nested case-control design, the authors examined 9,612 suicides & 199,306 matched controls. 38 suicide cases & 95 controls were diagnosed with posttraumatic stress disorder. The odds ratio associating posttraumatic stress disorder with suicide was 9.8. The association remained after controlling for psychiatric & demographic confounders. Additionally, persons with posttraumatic stress disorder & depression had a greater rate of suicide than expected based on their independent effects. (32 refs.) JA
