This research set out to identify gaps in services & existing policies in addressing suicide among young rural men in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Data were obtained from interviews with service providers & focus group discussions with 15 young men. Results indicated none of the service providers had a specific focus on the problem of suicide among young rural males. The prevention services available at the time were not seen as relevant to young men. They needed to become more acceptable, especially to those in the high-risk categories. More research needed to be done to find the reasons why young rural men are dying by suicide so that suitable service responses can be created. (35 refs.) JA
