This article reviews studies which examined the effect of antidepressant prescribing on suicide rates in the elderly. Although a decline in the numbers of late-life suicides has occurred, it is suggested this decline may not be sustainable through the treatment of depression alone. The identification of additional biomedical & psychosocial characteristics which prevent or promote suicide is also necessary to further reduce suicide among the aged. (28 refs.)
