This study considered numerous factors potentially related to suicide ideation in adults, including life stress, stress perceptions, social support, personality, alcohol use, chronic conditions, distress symptoms, & sociodemographic background. Using data from a health survey of 825 adults resident in the Reykjavik area, Iceland, it was found that financial hardship, legal stress, family difficulties, stress perceptions, & low material support were significantly related to suicide ideation. Multiple chronic conditions, frequent alcohol use, various forms of distress, low self-esteem, & an external locus of control were also associated with ideation. No significant relationships were found between sociodemographic background & suicide ideation. (65 refs.) JA
