This study evaluated the prevalence of suicide ideation & attempts in a representative sample of the general population in Casablanca, Morocco. The survey was conducted using face-to-face household interviews. The Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview was used to assess axis I diagnoses & the suicidality module was used to rate the severity of active suicidality. The 1-month prevalence of suicide ideation was 6.3%. 17 subjects reported at least 1 suicide attempt during their lifetime. Some variables were positively related to suicide ideation: non-married status, a history of psychiatric disorders, & childlessness. At least 1 mental disorder was present among 88.2% of subjects with suicide ideation; major depressive disorder being the most prevalent. (16 refs.) JA
