This study conducted an exploratory factor analysis of the Suicide Intent Scale. Two large samples of suicide attempters, 435 & 252 individuals, from a general hospital were studied. The validity of the scale’s subscales obtained from the factor analysis was investigated by examining the association between the subscales & clinical variables. There were 2 factors: expected lethality & planning. In both samples, male gender & depression tended to be associated with higher scores in both subscales (small-medium effect sizes). Hospitalization was associated with higher scores in both subscales (medium-large effects) suggesting that these subscales were reasonably good predictors of suicide attempt severity. (24 refs.) JA
