This study investigated risk factors for suicide ideation in prisoners as well as the prediction of suicidal behaviour by suicide ideation. 67 male Greek prisoners who expressed suicide ideation were evaluated; 67 prisoners without suicide ideation served as controls. All participants were followed-up prospectively for 12 months after their initial assessment. Independent significant risk factors for suicide ideation in prisoners were a family history of suicidal behaviour, history of psychiatric hospitalization, & higher scores on anxiety & depression scales. During follow-up, suicidal behaviour was observed in 12 of the subjects with suicidal ideation compared to none of the controls. (39 refs.) JA
