Suicide ideation & communications were examined in 89 suicide victims with a primary severe depression & matched controls. A blind record evaluation was performed, including scores on Beck’s Scale for Suicidal Ideation & additional items apart from that scale. There was no relation between high scores on the Beck’s scale & completed suicide. Among males, suicide ideation “beyond one’s own will” was related to suicide. Female victims who had made an attempt showed higher suicide ideation than those who had not. A substantial minority of women (22%) died by suicide without showing any previous intent. Only 5% of the males had shown no previous intent. (34 refs.) JA
