This study explored differences in psychosocial factors & referrals to follow-up among Norwegian self-poisoning patients according to their evaluated intention. A cross-sectional multicentre study of all 908 admissions to hospital in Oslo during 1 year was completed. 37% of all incidents were suicide attempts, 26% were appeals, & 38% were related to substance use. 55% of patients reported previous suicide attempts. Overall, patients showed a lack of social integration. Almost 1 in every 5 patients was discharged without any follow-up plans: 36% of patients with substance use-related poisoning & 5% of suicide attempt patients. (33 refs.) JA
