This study described suicide time trends in Brazil from 1980-2005. Data were obtained from the National Mortality Information System & the Brazilian Institute of Geography & Statistics. Suicide rates were calculated for the entire period for the country as a whole & the 26 states & federal district. Annual increases or decreases in mortality rates were also estimated using Prais-Winsten generalized linear regression. The mean suicide rate was 4.12 per 100,000 inhabitants. The study showed an increasing suicide trend in men & a decreasing trend in women. Suicide rates increased with age. In general, the highest rates were in Sao Paulo & in the states of the south & central-west regions. (29 refs.) JA
