The relationships of inhalant use & inhalant use disorders to suicide ideation & attempts were investigated in the largest comorbidity survey conducted in the United States. Suicide ideation was significantly more prevalent among inhalant users than nonusers & severity of inhalant use problems was positively related to suicide ideation. Among persons with inhalant use disorders, 67.4% had thought about suicide & 20.2% had attempted suicide. Multivariate logistic regression analyses indicated respondents with inhalant use disorders reported significantly higher levels of suicide ideation than inhalant nonusers. Inhalant use is associated with significantly increased risk for suicide ideation, especially among women & persons with DSM-IV inhalant use disorders. (19 refs.) JA
