Suicide Frequency in West-Herzegovina Canton for the Period 1984-2008

This study examined trends in the number of suicides in 4 municipalities of West-Herzegovina Canton from 1984 through 2008. There were 134 suicides. Before the war (1984-1991) there were 33 suicides & 15 suicides during the war (1992-1995). Most victims were male & suicides were more frequent in the 20-29 & 60+ age groups. The significant increase in suicides in the postwar period indicates the need for further research of socioeconomic determinants of health & war traumas. (8 refs.) JA
