A positive correlation between elderly dependency ratios & elderly suicide rates has been observed using 1-year cross-sectional data on elderly suicide rates. A cross-national study designed to replicate this positive correlation was undertaken by using 1-year average of 5 years data on suicide rates & using more recent data on both elderly suicide rates & elderly dependency ratios. The main findings were of significant positive correlations between elderly dependency ratios & suicide rates in both genders in the elderly age bands, 65-74 years & 75+ years. Results suggest the relationship is robust & accurate. (31 refs.) JA
