The correlation between general population suicide rates & the percentage of people in the general population adherent to Islam, while controlling for socioeconomic status & income inequality, was examined using cross-national data from the World Health Organization & the United Nations. Significant negative correlations were found. It is concluded caution should be exercised in attributing a causal relationship & the direction of causality from this ecological study due to ecological fallacy. However, there is reason to study further the impact of Islam on suicide by in-depth study of adherents to Islam, with & without suicide ideation & behaviours. (27 refs.) JA
