The authors reviewed evidence of the relationship between alcohol use & suicide through a search of the MedLine & PsycInfo databases. Multiple genetically-related intermediate phenotypes might influence this relationship. Psychiatric disorders, including psychosis, mood disorders, & anxiety disorders, as well as susceptibility to stress, might increase the risk of suicidal behaviour, but may also have reciprocal influences with drinking patterns. Increased suicide risk my be heralded by social withdrawal, breakdown of social bonds, & social marginalization. Prevention programs must take into account drinking habits & should reinforce healthy behavioural patterns. (274 refs.) JA
