A literature review was done to assess the effects of major multi-sport events on health & socioeconomic determinants of health in the population of the city hosting the event. 54 studies were included. Study quality was poor. 5 studies, each with a high risk of bias, reported health-related outcomes: suicide, paediatric health service demand, presentations for asthma in children (2 studies), & problems related to illicit drug use. Overall, the data did not indicate clear negative or positive health impacts. A multivariate model used to analyse trends in suicide during the 1998 Olympic Games showed no change in the suicide rate in Seoul, South Korea. (76 refs.) JA
