This paper analyzed the impact of war on the rate of suicide in a southwestern region of Croatia during 1986-1990 (pre-war), 1996-2000 (post-war) & 1991-1995 (period of war). 853 suicides were recorded from 1986-2000; 513 in peace time & 340 during the war. Methods changed drastically during the war, when 64 cases of firearm use were recorded compared with 18 cases pre-war & 36 cases post-war. Three parameters – suicide rate, use of firearms, & intoxication – showed the greatest changes in the war comapared with the pre- & post-war period in this region. (9 refs.) JA
