The relationship between suicide-related behaviours & different antiepileptic drugs in older veterans receiving new antiepileptic drug monotherapy from the Veterans Health Administration was examined, controlling for potential confounders. The strongest predictor of suicide-related behaviours, based on conditional logistic regression analysis, was affective disorder diagnosed before antiepileptic drug treatment. Increased suicide-related behaviours were not associated with individual antiepileptic drugs. Additional research with a larger sample is needed to determine the risk of suicide-related behaviours among less commonly used antiepileptic drugs. (32 refs.)
