Research suggests burnout rates among surgeons range from 30%-38%. Statistics indicate a substantial number of surgeons struggle with high levels of personal & professional distress, which can manifest itself in suicidal behaviors & death by suicide. The goals of this review are to: increase awareness of the symptoms, causes, & consequences of surgeon distress & burnout; encourage surgeons to be proactive in their personal health habits; prompt leaders of surgery departments & training programs to incorporate supportive workplaces; & stimulate research in these areas.
