A meta-analysis was conducted of 50 articles that examined the association between posttraumatic stress disorder & current suicide ideation & behaviour. There was no evidence for an increased risk of completed suicide in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder. Posttraumatic stress disorder was associated with an increased incidence of prior attempted suicide & prior & current suicide ideation. Controlling for other psychiatric disorders weakened but did not eliminate this association. There are significant clinical implications of the reported relationship for suicide risk assessment & therapy, & further studies might help to understand the mediating pathways. (114 refs.)
