Suicide is the leading cause of death in young Irish men. The policy document “Reach Out” lays out an obligation to plan research into suicidal behaviours to address knowledge deficits. This editorial discusses data shortfalls, a Health Research Board report on suicide in Ireland, psychological autopsy studies, regional & cultural variations in suicide risk & the implications of these for prevention, & the role for suicide research in Ireland.
