This study reviewed the literature regarding issues surrounding attempted suicide & provided a selective overview of the topic. Despite common usage of the term “attempted suicide”, it is sometimes confused with other self-harm behavours. However, attempted suicide should be used only when there is clear intent to die & but, for some reason, the individual is rescued. Even among those making a genuine suicide attempt, the lethality of the action should be taken into account. Clinicians should assess suicidal intent & lethality & provide clear treatment plans. The behaviour of attempters carries a high probability of repetition & attempted suicide is a major risk factor for subsequent suicide. (69 refs.)
