Research Proposal: Testing the Predictive Value of a Suicide Checklist in Remand Centres

In the first phase of this project, the authors developed a suicide checklist that could be used by clinical staff in correctional institutions to standardize the assessment procedure & to help predict suicide risk among inmates. The second phase of the project is the subject of this proposal. Data will be collected on a cohort of inmates upon entrance & on release from the Edmonton Remand Centre. On entrance, suicide risk scores will be gathered using the suicide checklist. Outcome measures at time of release will be whether an inmate was identified as a suicide risk while incarcerated, & whether special administrative/clinical management decisions were made.
