Usage of the Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Help Line (NKHL): an Analysis of 11 Years’ of Database

Information collected from the crisis lines & the toll-free AIDS Information line operated by the Nunavut Kamatsiaqtut Help Line was analyzed to assess the demographics of its users, the pattern of use & services delivered by the lines, & the association between the pattern of use of its local lines with the lunar phase & photoperiod in Iqaluit. Results indicated the crisis lines were used primarily by females & by adults for discussing personal problems, mainly relationship difficulties & loneliness/boredom. The calls followed clear lunar & photoperiod patterns. The monthly pattern of calls involving suicidal thoughts/intentions showed peaks during October, December, March, June, & July, mirroring patterns of suicides in Nunavut.
