Information was gathered over a 7-year period (2000-2006) on suicide among the Travellers in Ireland. Over the study period, the rate of suicide in this population was 3.70 per 10,000 population. Suicide was nine times as common among males as females. Most victims had never been married or were separated or widowed. Over 65% of suicides occurred among those aged 30 & under. Roadside families were at greater risk of suicides than families living in houses. In nearly 70% of cases, it was the individual’s first attempt at suicide. Motivations for suicide were grouped according to patterns: troubled suicides, motiveless suicides, bereavement suicides, violence suicides, & shamed suicides. Prevention strategies are also discussed.
