This presentation reported on the use of the Visual Analogue Scale in measuring the wish to live & the wish to die components of patients who had attempted suicide. The results were compared with those obtained by the validated Suicide Intent Scale. The scale was administered to 36 women, aged 18-30 years. Results suggested, in general terms, the patients were aware of their mixed feelings regarding living & dying & that these had been translated into actions approximating their feelings. Results also suggest the Visual Analogue Scale may have a place in the screening of suicidal patients.
