This article describes the results of a questionnaire about suicide that was distributed to members of the Akita Prefectural Medical Association in Japan. Data collected indicated there were 138 suicides from July 2001-June 2002. Suicide was more common in individuals in their 50s & 50s. Most suicides occurred in the home. Depressive disorder was the most common psychiatric disorder & the most frequently observed complaints were economic problems, although this last variable tended to present differently in different age-groups.
