The first goal of this study was to link empirical measures of 3 theoretical explanations of marital status differences to the variation in male & female standardized suicide difference coefficients in 12 developed countries, circa 1960. Predictors of Durkheim’s social integration hypothesis, Gibbs & Martin’s concepts of marital status integration, & norms on suicide acceptability are included. The second goal was to examine how empirical indicators impact age-specific differences in the male minus female standardized suicide difference coefficients – differences that varied by age in all 12 of the study populations.
