284 cases admitted to hospital in Karachi between January 1997-August 2003 were studied by analyzing medical records with the aim of identifying characteristics of deliberate self-harm. Despite the difference in the sociocultural background of the patients, many results were found to be consistent with Western data. Findings suggest problem-solving therapy, stress management, & improved mental health care may be effective interventions in preventing deliberate self-harm. Prescription of medications should be regulated. Further studies are suggested at the community level. (20 refs.)
