This cross-sectional study examined the rate of suicide attempts & relevant variables among 2100 Korean adolescents using an anonymous, self-report questionnaire. Risk factors for suicide attempts were also identified. The rate of suicide attempts was 11.6% with delinquent adolescents reporting a higher rate of suicide attempts than student adolescents. Adolescent attempters indicated higher levels of dysfunctional family dynamics & maladaptive personalities. In addition, adolescents who attempted suicide expressed a significantly lower level of life satisfaction & less effective coping strategies. 5 predictive risk factors appeared to be statistically significant: coping strategy, parental child-rearing pattern, depression, parent-child relationship, & psychosomatic symptoms.
