The incidence of post-hanging pulmonary distress in cases of attempted suicide by hanging was investigated as were predictors of outcome among these patients. 38 of 335 patients, aged 16 & older, met study criteria. Data from intensive care unit records over 5 years, x-rays, & laboratory investigations were reviewed. 11% of the 38 patients were diagnosed with post-hanging pulmonary distress. The overall mortality was 5% which increased to 34.2% in the presence of pulmonary distress. (22 refs.)
