This study examined the association between baseline clinical & demographic variables & subsequent suicide attempts & completions through 2 years of follow-up using a pattern-mixture model. Of the 1,556 subjects with complete data, 50 patients attempted suicide & 7 died by suicide. Several variables predicted suicidality when considered alone, but after controlling for redundant prediction from other baseline characteristics, only history of suicide & percentage of days depressed in the past year were significantly associated with attempts & suicides. In a secondary analysis that included a greater number of variables but fewer subjects, only prior suicide attempts predicted prospective suicidality. (48 refs.)
