In this letter to the editor, the authors briefly discuss the case of an elderly woman, without a previous psychiatric history, who attempted suicide after misunderstanding a letter notifying her of new patient privacy regulations. She believed the letter meant her insurance company was discontinuing her coverage. This letter was judged to be significant factor in precipitating the suicide attempt. (2 refs.)
