The authors identified the urban population at greatest risk for subway injuries & investigated the influence of local economies on injury rates. 208 cases which occurred during the period 1999-2003 were reviewed. Additional data for the years 2000-2003 showed that 14 of 56 cases during this time were the result of suicide attempts. The consideration of economic triggers for increased vigilance – as well as universal precautions – are recommended as methods for reducing these injuries. (17 refs.)
