In this letter to the editor, the authors report on their study of suicide among patients diagnosed with multiple myeloma. Their hypothesis was that there was an increased relative risk of suicide among these patients compared to patients with acute myeloid leukaemia. There were 43 suicides reported to the Swedish Cause of Death Registry among 24,489 patients in the Swedish Cancer Registry. Results did not support the hypothesis. The authors also comment briefly on a study by Kendal (2007) in which a 4.8 times excess in the overall number of male suicides over females was reported. (5 refs.)
