This article notes there have been 72 confirmed suicides by American soldiers since the beginning of the war with Iraq. The procedures for collecting this data are described, including inclusion criteria. The majority of deaths involved single, white, male, junior enlisted soldiers, with the cause of death being a self-inflicted gunshot wound. This profile is consistent with those in earlier reports. The implications of these findings for improving the suicide prevention program are discussed. (3 refs.)
