With support from mental health workers, elected officials, the California Highway Patrol, & the local community, plans to install a suicide prevention barrier on the Cold Spring Bridge, located in Santa Barbara, by 2010 were announced. It has been claimed such a barrier would not only deter suicides but actually prevent suicides & thus save lives. The present author asserts this claim is unfounded. He reviews the evidence presented in favour of the barrier & discusses his own research, both of which are said to show there is no evidence that a barrier will save lives. (17 notes)
