The National Confidential Inquiry into Suicide and Homicide by People With Mental Illness was established in 1992. This article discusses a number a new directions for the inquiry including studies on the effectiveness of interventions; the expansion of data collection to include both quantitative & descriptive information; obtaining data on mental health service contact of those convicted of serious violence; psychological autopsies of suicides; the antecedents of homicide; suicides by inpatients & within 3 months of discharge; & service monitoring.
