This study examined various aspects of narcissism in 18 Norwegian patients admitted to acute psychiatric wards & compared their level of narcissism to that of an age- & gender-matched sample from the general population. Being male, involuntarily admitted, having a diagnosis of schizophrenia, higher self-esteem, & severe violence were significantly associated with high narcissism, as were low levels of suicidality, depression, anxiety, & global functioning scores. Depression & suicidality were negatively associated with the Narcissistic Personality Inventory scores. (33 refs.)
